about:

If you plan to swim northwards, the ideal parking area is in Los Muertitos, right in the middle of the beach, forming a small mount shape (you can see this on Google Earth). You can park on the higher level of the mount, and walk downwards toward the beach. You can either start swiming from that point on or walk towards the end of the beach but note that the beach stretches 2 miles more. Through this stretch you will swim over a sandy bottom interrupted by coral and seaweed patches. You will see a shipwreck which is beautiful both under and above the sea surface.

After swimming approximately 1 km you will find a wide arroyo with a small community. Note that for the vast majority of beaches in Mexico anything below high tide line is public domain and open to the public for camping (Zona Federal Marítima or ZOFEMAT). However, it’s wise to keep your distance and provide the community their space. You might encounter territorial dogs and you should always be alert for that.

Lessons learned / recommendations:

  • Double check your gear before leaving

  • Not all access points are equal-some require a significant land component

  • People we meet can really define the trip

  • Winds in Baja can shift quickly
